I still have that same barbie case and dolls! We'd gather with girlfriends on the block and play barbies or games. Oh my goodness I can't imagine anyone paying for those cracker jack prizes now! LOL... I didn't think anyone saved them! I loved the hoola hoop too and jumping rope. Our school lunch break was always active with these things and Super Balls! We played outside with friends and had to be home when night fall started. We didn't have Woolworths we had a SS Kresge and a Cunninghams, but those were fun places to go and have a quick bite or look at make-up! We had a milk man, a bread man and a coffee man! Those came to an end by the time I was probably 8 or 10 years old. Ahh..the good ole' days! Happy Birthday! I do recall the mechanical horses that only cost a dime to ride. They had one inside the Publix grocery store my mom shopped at...right next to the corner of the store where kids could sit at the little table and chairs and read the Golden books while their mom's grocery shopped. Of course, times have really changed and no one in their right mind would leave their kids unattended like that these days.

We didn't have a store devoted to penny candy either but I remember everything else you mentioned. I used to be pretty good at hula hooping too. Maybe you and I should have a contest the next time you come to visit me! lol. Hey, did you ever wear any of those one piece rompers that tied at the shoulders like those girls in the hulahoop photo? Boy, I had a ton of those.

Fun post, GF!Shari @ My Cottage of Blisshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11438747359748779374noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1173326157626669752.post-30791626605608400082011-08-11T12:35:27.066-07:002011-08-11T12:35:27.066-07:00I enjoyed your memories...many were mine too! Some of those toys were still popular when I came along. Maybe it was a sign of things to come, but I spent many hours decorating my doll house. I did love Cracker Jack Toys - sometimes they had to be snapped together and did things. Woolworths was always a paradise for a kid and playing outside was more fun than any video came could ever hope for.DearHelenHartmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01191525904664350294noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1173326157626669752.post-84295821655564136772011-08-11T07:25:10.276-07:002011-08-11T07:25:10.276-07:00What fun memories. Most of those kinds of places were pretty much gone by then - no penny candy, no soda fountain, not even the good humor truck. But we did run around outside all the time - hopscotch, riding bikes, and one of my favorites - walking downtown (I lived - and still do - in a small town) to the local drug store to buy singles (45s). Seems like they weren't much more than $1.99 at the time. I have a 10 year old now and she doesn't have nearly the freedom I had to just go out and play. It is sad. Thanks for sharing such fun memories.Sweet Bee Cottagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12621819781979605687noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1173326157626669752.post-22290816702580012412011-08-10T12:41:50.963-07:002011-08-10T12:41:50.963-07:00You and I Debbie.

Used to pour vinegar all over them too. YUMMY.
I used to get a dollar allowance every Sat. We would go to Woolworth and buy a beetle 45 or other's that we loved. I was a teen
ager in the 50's also and it was such a good time back then. All of the things you wrote about I did, too!! Add side-walk and roller-rink skating to that, along with long hours of playing Monopoly, learning how to dance, using Breck shampoo and Maybeline mascara, and stocking with a seam down the back!
Those were such sweet innocent days
It is not like that anymore, is it?
Thanks for sharing this memory....
have a fun day......FrancyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
