Vintage Things Thursday

Hi everyone! It's been awhile since my last post. I've been busy with house projects. Always something to do! I have been missing out on the fun, and I wanted to participate this week in Vintage Things Thursday, hosted by Suzanne of http://coloradolady.blogspot.com/2010/01/vintage-thingies-thursday-re-run-first.html. Today, I wanted to share with you a Farfel mug I've had for years. If you grew up in the 50s and 60s then you remember Saturday Mornings glued in front of the family's B&W TV set watching kiddie shows. Many of your warmest memories may not be of the shows themselves but of the commercial breaks nestled between them ... namely of Farfel the talking dog, his pal Danny O'Day and of course gifted ventriloquist Jimmy Nelson. And what babyboomer can forget that famous jingle ... “N-E-S-T-L-E-S … Nestles makes the very best … chaaawwwwwclate. Hubby and I inherited this from his dad, who also had a basement full of milk memorabilia.

From, this Farfel mug, to milk bottles, to butter churns, and cow creamers, his dad had quite a collection. He even had a plaid hat that he wore, full of paper milk toppers. He belonged to a milk bottle club, and his motto was "Always Stay Grade A". He would buy, sell, and collect milk bottles from all over the country. These are some of the nicer ones that we kept from the collection when he passed away in 1983. Note the one bottle in the picture with the spoon hanging from the top. (second from right click to make larger)) These were called baby face milk bottles, and you could use the spoon to scoop the cream from the top.

Let's not forget Elsie the cow. Here is a glass and mug with Elsie's emblem on them. He also had many Elsie the cow things. Just a bit of nostalgia to share with you all. Hope you liked the trip down memory lane. Thanks for visiting, and don't forget to visit Suzanne's for more vintage treasures.

I've always loved Elsie the Cow! Those milk bottles are really great, especially the baby face ones. Sounds like your FIL had a great collection of milk memorabilia, and you've got some great keepsakes of his!
Happy VTT!

The greatest things about keepsakes like these are the memories they inspire.

I bet you can't see a paper milk lid without thinking about that hat!

Great post.

I have the exact same Farfel mug that my brothers and sisters and I would fight over at Grandma's house. We all wanted to use it. It was made by Scio Pottery located in Scio, Ohio. I never knew the story of Farfel until now. Thanks for the info!
