Favorite Memories of childhood

Hello sweet blogger friends! I grew up in the late 50's early 60's and was thinking about some favorite childhood memories. Please come and take a walk down memory lane with me. You may remember some of these too. This was one of my favorite things. A truck with a ride on the back, would come through the neighborhood. It cost .10 for a ride. This was a merry-go-round, but my favorite was the whip.

The penny candy store! Oh my goodness! I was in heaven. A large candy bar cost .05 back then. Today it's more like .75-1.00. For .10 you could get a small bag of ten pieces of candy. I loved how it all was displayed too.

Do you remember Cracker Jacks? The prizes were so cool! People pay a lot of money on e-bay today for these cool charms, and to think we threw them away.

Lemonade stands are pretty much a thing of the past now, but so fun for young kids back in the day. A great way to earn money for some penny candy!

I couldn't wait to here the bells from the Good Humor man! Oh yeah, we would come a runnin'.

My favorite was the Bomb Pop. It was two different kinds of sherbet, covered in dark chocolate. Ummm yummy!

Playing school with my friend, was one of my most favorite things to do when I was about 10. I was always Mrs Dyer. (my favorite teacher in 3rd and 6th grade.) I wore high heels, and we had a blast.

Jump rope was another of my favorites. You just don't see kids outside much anymore, getting exercise and playing.

I used to be pretty good at doing the hula hoop!

I played hopscotch almost everyday. We would be gone for hours playing outside, and only come home for lunch and dinner. Things were so much simpler then.

I had a doll house almost just like this one! I would play for hours with it, rearranging the plastic furniture.

Tammy had to be one of my most favorite toys. We didn't have toys like they have today. We improvised a lot. My dolls, Barbie and Tammy, slept in a shoebox, with a little pillow and blanket that my mom made.

My mom made a lot of my Barbie clothes. I got them for Christmas gifts. I think back on how long it must have taken her to sew those darn things. (I love and miss you so much mom .....sniff) She would have been 86 this year.

I loved to bake with my mom, especially at Christmas. We would bake Christmas cookies, and she would safely tuck them in tins, so we wouldn't eat all of them before Christmas. She was a great cook too! I am lucky to have her Betty Crocker cookbook, her aluminum measuring cups, her pyrex bowls, and her rolling pin.

I started buying my first 45 records when I was 11 I think. We would save out allowance to go to the store and buy one song.

Remember the five and dime store? In the summer I used to go and visit with my grandmother for 2 weeks in Va . Thursdays were grocery shopping days, and we drove into West Point. They had a Ben Franklin store in town, and we were allowed to go in and buy a new box of crayons and coloring book. Afterwards, we went to get ice cream. Oh, this was the highlight of the day!

I loved Woolworth stores! I guess it would be what Walmart is today. Woolworths was a lot smaller though. I got my first job there working in the luncheonette when I was 16. That was what they called it then.

Good ole' soda fountains. Oh they were just the best thing since sliced bread. A great hangout for a teenager too!

Anotherfavorite memory, was going to the beach with my family. We packed a lunch of my moms great fried chicken and potato salad. It was just the best of times. Well, this is some of the great times I remember. What are some of your favorite memories? Thanks for coming by for a visit. I am joining in with Suzanne over at http://coloradolady.blogspot.com/2011/08/vintage-thingie-thursday-vintage-school.html Stop over for some more vintage fun! Thanks Suzanne.

Hi...I enjoyed your blog and a trip down Memory Lane! I was a teen
ager in the 50's also and it was such a good time back then. All of the things you wrote about I did, too!! Add side-walk and roller-rink skating to that, along with long hours of playing Monopoly, learning how to dance, using Breck shampoo and Maybeline mascara, and stocking with a seam down the back!
Those were such sweet innocent days
It is not like that anymore, is it?
Thanks for sharing this memory....
have a fun day......Francy

You and I Debbie.
We also had a french fry truck, like the ice cream truck come by around 4, just before dinner, my mom didn't like that, but for 10cent we could get a cone shape container with hot salty fries, and for 25 cents we would get a box full. Used to pour vinegar all over them too. YUMMY.
I used to get a dollar allowance every Sat. We would go to Woolworth and buy a beetle 45 or other's that we loved. Herman Hermits was another, the Monkey's ...
I had that same black Barbie case too. I'm sorry you miss your maman so much. She knows you love her.
Thanks for the memories. LOVED this post.
I was a hoola hoop girl too ; )

What fun memories. I grew up in the 70s and some of those things were still around. But I never saw a traveling ride like that. Most of those kinds of places were pretty much gone by then - no penny candy, no soda fountain, not even the good humor truck. But we did run around outside all the time - hopscotch, riding bikes, and one of my favorites - walking downtown (I lived - and still do - in a small town) to the local drug store to buy singles (45s). Seems like they weren't much more than $1.99 at the time. I have a 10 year old now and she doesn't have nearly the freedom I had to just go out and play. It is sad. Thanks for sharing such fun memories.

So glad I came by to visit and found myself transported back in time! I did love Cracker Jack Toys - sometimes they had to be snapped together and did things. Woolworths was always a paradise for a kid and playing outside was more fun than any video came could ever hope for.

That's a little before my time but my Mom talks about those "good old days" when life was so much more simple. Some of those toys were still popular when I came along. Maybe it was a sign of things to come, but I spent many hours decorating my doll house. Thanks for the memories!

I never saw one of those trucks with the rides...kinda cool! I do recall the mechanical horses that only cost a dime to ride. They had one inside the Publix grocery store my mom shopped at...right next to the corner of the store where kids could sit at the little table and chairs and read the Golden books while their mom's grocery shopped. Of course, times have really changed and no one in their right mind would leave their kids unattended like that these days.

We didn't have a store devoted to penny candy either but I remember everything else you mentioned. I used to be pretty good at hula hooping too. Maybe you and I should have a contest the next time you come to visit me! lol. Hey, did you ever wear any of those one piece rompers that tied at the shoulders like those girls in the hulahoop photo? Boy, I had a ton of those.

Fun post, GF!

Love looking back on childhood memories, Debbie. I've done several posts this past 4 weeks on memories. Life sure has changed. Wonder what our gr'kids will have to really reflect upon in their older years ... probably only technology.

Would you be so kind to leave a comment on my BLOG ONLY, for the Miracle Makeover fund drive. Charlie, 8 yr. old, & his story are fabulous. Every comment brings us a $1 for the next person that will be sponsored.

Have a beautiful weekend.

Ahh, nice trip down memory lane! I was born in 1957....We had an ice cream truck that would come flying through the subdivision and we would run madly out to it! I still have that same barbie case and dolls! We'd gather with girlfriends on the block and play barbies or games. Oh my goodness I can't imagine anyone paying for those cracker jack prizes now! LOL... I didn't think anyone saved them! I loved the hoola hoop too and jumping rope. Our school lunch break was always active with these things and Super Balls! We played outside with friends and had to be home when night fall started. We didn't have Woolworths we had a SS Kresge and a Cunninghams, but those were fun places to go and have a quick bite or look at make-up! We had a milk man, a bread man and a coffee man! Those came to an end by the time I was probably 8 or 10 years old. Ahh..the good ole' days! Happy Birthday! Liz
